First-Time at Prometric: What to Expect for the PEBC Evaluating Exam

March 10, 2026 15 min read
Prometric Test Centre for PEBC EE

Taking the PEBC Evaluating Exam at a Prometric test centre can feel unfamiliar if you've never done computer-based testing before. The PEBC partners with Prometric to deliver the EE at secure testing locations across Canada. Knowing what to expect—from check-in procedures to ID requirements, breaks, and the computer interface—reduces anxiety and helps you focus entirely on the exam content. Here's a practical guide for first-time Prometric test-takers.

Before You Arrive

Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled start time. Late arrival may result in being denied entry. Prometric centres are strict about timing. Bring the following:

  • Primary ID: Government-issued photo ID (passport or driver's licence) with your name, photo, and signature. The name on your ID must match exactly the name on your PEBC registration
  • Secondary ID: A second form of ID may be required—check your PEBC confirmation email and the Prometric candidate handbook. A credit card or health card with your name may suffice
  • PEBC confirmation: Your exam confirmation from PEBC with your candidate number and exam details. Have a printed copy or digital copy readily accessible

Leave prohibited items in your car or at home: phones, smartwatches, bags, backpacks, notes, study materials, food and drink (except as permitted), and any electronic devices. Lockers or secure storage are typically provided for personal belongings. Do not bring valuables—you may not have access to your locker during the exam.

Pro tip: Do a dry run to the centre a few days before your exam. Note the route, parking availability, and how long it takes. On exam day, add a 15-minute buffer for traffic or unexpected delays.

Check-In and ID

At the front desk, you'll present your ID and sign in. Staff will verify your identity and may take your photo and/or fingerprint for security purposes. You'll receive a locker key or instructions on where to store your belongings. Empty your pockets—keys, wallet, and other items typically go in the locker. You may be allowed to keep your ID in a clear bag or pocket as instructed.

You'll receive instructions on when to enter the test room. Listen carefully to the rules: no talking, no looking at other screens, no leaving the room without permission. Failure to comply with centre rules can result in exam cancellation and potential reporting to the PEBC. When in doubt, ask the staff before the exam begins.

The Test Room and Computer Setup

You'll be seated at a computer in a quiet, monitored room. Other test-takers may be present (taking different exams), so expect a professional, library-like atmosphere. The PEBC EE is delivered via Prometric's secure software. You'll have:

  • Calculator: An on-screen calculator or a basic physical calculator is provided. Practice with a simple calculator beforehand—you won't have access to scientific calculator functions
  • Scratch paper and pen/pencil: Use these for calculations and notes. You typically cannot take them with you when you leave; they're collected at the end
  • Question navigation: You'll see one question at a time. Use "Next" and "Previous" to move through the exam. There's usually a question review screen to see which questions you've answered and which you've marked for review
  • Mark for review: Use this feature to flag questions you want to revisit. You can filter to show only marked questions during your review time

There is a short tutorial before the exam begins—typically 5–10 minutes. Use it to familiarize yourself with the interface: how to select answers, use the calculator, and navigate. The tutorial time may or may not count against your exam time; follow the on-screen instructions. Don't rush through it—being comfortable with the interface will save you time and reduce stress during the actual exam.

Breaks and Timing

Break policies vary by centre and exam. For the PEBC EE, there may be an optional scheduled break between sections, or unscheduled breaks may be allowed. Critically: the exam timer typically continues during unscheduled breaks. If you leave the room for a washroom break, the clock keeps running. Plan accordingly.

Use the washroom immediately before you enter the test room. During the exam, only take a break if absolutely necessary. If you must leave, you'll typically need to raise your hand, sign out, leave your ID with staff, and go. When you return, you'll sign back in and may be subject to a security check (e.g., empty pockets, sleeves rolled up). Your belongings in the locker may be inspected. All of this eats into your exam time.

The EE is 3 hours for 140 questions—approximately 1.3 minutes per question (per PEBC). Every minute counts. Minimize breaks to maximize your available time.

Pro Tips for Exam Day

  • Do a dry run: Visit the centre location beforehand if possible. Know where to park, which entrance to use, and how long the drive takes. Eliminate unknowns
  • Dress in layers: Test rooms can be cool due to air conditioning. Bring a light sweater or jacket that you can remove if needed
  • Eat a light meal before the exam: Avoid heavy, greasy, or unfamiliar foods. You want steady energy—not a sugar crash or digestive discomfort. A balanced breakfast or lunch 1–2 hours before works well
  • Stay hydrated—but not too much: Drink enough to avoid dehydration, but don't overdo it right before the exam. You don't want to need a washroom break 30 minutes in
  • Practice with computer-based questions: Use passEE or similar resources to simulate the experience. Get comfortable reading on screen, clicking answers, and using the navigation. The more familiar the format, the less cognitive load on exam day
  • Get a good night's sleep: Rest matters more than last-minute cramming. Aim for 7–8 hours of sleep the night before

Practice under exam conditions: passEE's question bank lets you practice in a format similar to the real exam. Build familiarity with timed, computer-based testing. View subscription plans.
